After leaving Brooklyn I went to Central Park and just had a wander round. I stayed mainly in the southern part of the park as I intended to walk down 5th Avenue back to 42nd St afterwards and didn’t want to get to far up 5th. So I started at Columbus Circle, the SW corner of the park and walked in a big loop into the park and back down to the SE corner, opposite the Plaza Hotel on 5th Avenue. It was a very pleasant stroll for about an hour or so – the pictures below are some of those I took. As you can see the weather was bright and sunny, with temperatures perhaps in the high teens CÂș.
Then I walked down 5th Avenue to 42nd St. No photos of this – it was all too busy, and stopping to take a picture would have elicited some New York comments from other pedestrians. It was as glitzy as I remember – Bergdorf Goodmans, Saks, and so on. There were federal anti-terrorism agents patrolling outside Trump Tower, and I got the feeling that they would definitely object to having their photo taken. I didn’t do any shopping – by this time I’d been on my feet for a number of hours, and didn’t feel reputable-looking enough to venture in Saks or any of the fashion stores. (This is definitely a place where you need to dress up to go shopping.) I did wander into the Apple store, however. All you can see at ground level is a 30′ x 30′ glass cube, inside which is a lift and a spiral staircase; the shop floor (which is huge) is below ground. Apparently it’s open 24/7, but obviously customers hadn’t got the memo about that because when I was there it was absolutely packed. I bought an adapter – thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet – for use at home with my MacBook Pro which only has wifi, not built-in ethernet.
